Wilmington is also home to fort Christina, the first permanent settlement in the Delaware Valley. Fort Christina commemorates the colony of New Sweden when Peter Minuit's expedition landed from the Swedish ships Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip about March 29, 1638.
